The artistic angle
This man is chalking the outline for a Byrne Creek Walkway to go between the library and the new high rise building to the east of it. We haven’t seen a drawing of the final concept but imagine it may echo the intent of the very attractive artwork done at the Highgate Mall – to remind us that there was once a creek in the neighbourhood – and fish and other wildlife. Below is a photo taken on February 16 as construction progresses. We’ll keep you up to date!
Other artwork planned for inside the new facility:
1. Some of the original Stream of Dreams fish will be mounted on a wall to commemorate the fact that this site was where the first fish decorated a fence to create awareness on how we can keep our watersheds clean and healthy. And that the Edmonds neighbourhood was where Stream of Dreams was born. See http://www.streamofdreams.org/ for a picture of the original installation and for more on Stream of Dreams.
2. A piece of fabric art by Bettina Matzkuhn, a staff member at Burnaby Public Library, that commemorates the life and interests of a former staff member who has passed on while also showing the connection between the old branch, the history of the new site, and the rich diversity of the neighbourhood. The piece will be unveiled at our Grand Opening next fall.
